What are some common types of golf injuries?

At Peak Performance Physical Therapy, we can help you find relief for any injury you may be experiencing. Some common types of sports injuries include:

  • Golfer’s elbow. This condition is used to describe an overuse golf injury that causes muscle inflammation inside the elbow. This injury runs from the bony point of your elbow and can stretch down your forearm, making it difficult to extend or lift your arm. Golfer’s elbow can make it difficult to perform your sport, especially with swinging motions.
  • Flexor tendinitis. This is an overuse injury that causes swelling in the tendons that control your hand movement, making it difficult to bend your fingers and move your hand or elbow. Flexor tendinitis is typically associated with golf, as it is a sport that requires constant swinging.
  • Rotator cuff tear. Rotator cuff tears can occur from either acute or overuse causes. For example, partaking in repetitive swinging motions, such as those associated with golf, can all result in rotator cuff tears. This occurs when the muscles or tendons that surround the shoulder joint become damaged or torn.

I went to go visit Peak Performance Physical Therapy with Jill Marlan and her staff. I found the experience was fantastic. Playing sports all my life I was probably in denial thinking it’s just old age. I hurt myself. I have made it this far without having a major injury but now I have it so maybe you know my baseball days are over with. I’m back playing again. I’m playing at full strength. I’m having probably my best season I’ve had in years.

The Titleist Performance Institute is the leading organization in golf-specific health, fitness and swing advice. It is one of the nation’s leaders in golf performance, and trains Certified TPI Golf Instructors and healthcare professionals to help you break past physical factors that limit you as a golfer. Peak Performance Physical Therapy is proud to partner with TPI Certification. Through years of observing different players’ technique and mechanics, TPI has mastered the physical functionality of the body during the golf swing, and helps players work towards the most efficient swing possible. TPI Certification focuses on the body’s physical limitations, reducing injury, increasing performance, golf swing and correcting specific mechanics.

TPI’s mission is to educate golfers and industry professionals on the Body-Swing ConnectionTM, which identifies the body’s physical limitations and how they directly correlate to their swing. Peak Performance Physical Therapy offers one-on-one instruction from our TPI Certified Medical Professional. Participants will be taken through a series of functional testing. These tests evaluate your strength, flexibility and mobility and will provide recommendations to help maximize physical advantages unique to individual golfers, and that likely lead to a lower chance of injury.

Physical Therapy

If you have aches and pains when playing golf or that stop you from playing golf we can work with you to get a prescription from your doctor for a structured course of physical therapy addressing the pain and your physical limitations that likely are contributing to pain during your swing. This will include the TPI Certification screen and reassessment. A functional screen that evaluates the movement of the entire body and how it relates to the golf swing. Customized golf fitness exercise program based on these physical findings to enhance your golf performance and decrease the potential of injury. Reassessment is also an important aspect to treatment. We utilize a functional screen to evaluate the progress of your individualized fitness program and instruction in new exercises and/or progressions to current programs based on new assessment findings.
