Chronic back and neck pain are among the most common conditions we diagnose and treat at our physical therapy clinic. We spend a great deal of time educating our patients and their loved ones about these issues—why they occur, how to manage them, and most importantly, how to prevent them from happening in the first place. A physical therapist can help you find relief from both back and neck pain.

Many people assume that chronic pain in the back or neck is simply a “normal” part of aging. However, this is not the case. Even if you’ve been struggling with pain for years, you can still achieve improved function and a better quality of life with less discomfort.

Here are 5 Truths About Back and Neck Pain:

  • In many cases, targeted exercise can significantly reduce pain and improve mobility.
  • You don’t always need surgery or medications to manage chronic pain.
  • Back and neck pain are often preventable.
  • Most people will experience some degree of back or neck pain at least once in their lifetime.
  • It’s important to identify and address the root cause, not just the symptoms.

Michelle Stimson

“Before coming to Peak Performance, my life felt like it had come to a standstill. In December 2023, I suffered a back injury that left me in constant pain. I couldn’t sit in a chair, even for a minute without discomfort. I couldn’t drive my car, and I couldn’t even stand long enough to take a shower. The simple pleasures of life like going out to dinner, enjoying a movie, or spending time with family felt completely out of reach. After months of treatment and little progress, I felt like I was running out of options. I was hopeless, dependent on daily medication, and unsure if I would ever get my life back.

In August 2024, my journey took a new direction when I transitioned my care to Peak Performance. At my very first appointment, Jill listened with compassion and genuine interest, making me feel truly heard. That alone gave me hope. Within just one month, the changes were undeniable. I was able to wean off my medications, something I hadn’t thought possible. Jill’s confidence, encouragement, and personalized approach gave me the belief that I could reach a full recovery. With steady progress and hard work, my mobility improved, and by November I could finally sit comfortably for more than 15 minutes: an achievement that brought back the freedom to drive, enjoy dinners out, and even watch a movie with my family.

By February, I reached a milestone I never imagined possible: I boarded a plane to Tucson, Arizona, and not only traveled without pain but also hiked through the beautiful desert with my family. This summer, I rode my bike for the first time in two years: an unforgettable moment of freedom and joy.

I am so grateful to Jill and the team at Peak Performance for walking beside me on this journey. Their support has given me back the parts of life that matter most, time with my family, the ability to move without constant pain, and the confidence to keep pushing forward. For anyone facing a long road of recovery, know that progress is possible, and with the right care, you can reclaim your life.”

Cervical Disk Herniation

A cervical disk herniation can make everyday tasks such as reading or turning your head painful and difficult. The cervical spine is found in the neck, and connects the head to the upper back. The bones of the spine have a cushion between them called an intervertebral disk.

Therapy will help you relieve the pain of a cervical disk herniation and will teach you how to move in ways that protect your spine. Your therapist will give you a home program that includes stretching and strengthening exercises, and will teach you healthy postures to decrease the risk of further injury.
