Differences between sprains and strains

My interest in veterinary medicine led me to pursue it as my major in college, while also being part of the basketball team. However, during one of the games, I suffered a serious ankle injury that sidelined me for the rest of the season. That’s when I was introduced to physical therapy, which changed my life and career path. Through physical therapy, I was able to recover, improve my strength, return to practice after 10 weeks, and switch my major to physical therapy. I realized that helping others achieve their physical goals and overcome their injuries was my true passion. I was fortunate enough to play basketball at a high level for three more years, without any ankle problems. Ankle pain and treatment is the core reason why I founded Peak Performance Physical Therapy. I want to share the same success story with you that I experienced. Don’t delay your treatment!

Thank you for choosing Peak Performance Physical Therapy, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

It is a common misconception that “sprains” and “strains” are interchangeable terms. In reality, there are some key differences between the two. In order to understand how they differ, it is important to first understand what ligaments and tendons are.

Ligaments connect bones to bones within a joint, while tendons connect bones to muscles. When you experience a sprain, you are tearing or overstretching a ligament. Conversely, when you experience a strain, you are tearing or overstretching a tendon.

If you have recently sustained a sprain or strain, or you believe you may have, don’t hesitate to contact us to consult with a physical therapist. We’ll determine the best course of treatment for your needs and get you started on the road to recovery! Our innovative care strategies at Peak Performance Physical Therapy will help you find quick relief.

Achilles Tendinopathy

Achilles tendinopathy is a condition that causes pain, swelling, stiffness, and irritation of the Achilles tendon, the strong band which joins your calf muscles to your heel on the back of your lower leg. If this tendon is inflamed, walking may become painful and difficult.

The achilles tendon may be injured gradually due to overuse or by a sudden injury. Damage to the tendon occurring in the form of small tears is commonly known as achilles tendinopathy.

Symptoms of Achilles tendinopathy include pain and irritation. The tendon may become tender to the touch and may be thickened and swollen as well.
