Super Bowl LVI Injury Recap

We all have injuries just like the professionals.

DID YOU KNOW? The sooner an injury is treated, the better the prognosis is for a full recovery! You saw on the sidelines that professional athletes take care of injuries right away. Why don’t you? Knowing this is a true game-changer!

Treat yourself like a professional. We are part of your team and work closely with your physicians to help keep you in the game of life, whether playing sports, playing with your kids, or just going for a 10 min walk.

Here are some of the injuries a few athletes sustained during Super Bowl LVI. They are all human, just like us.

Odell Beckham Jr. – Knee

Odell Beckham Jr, Wide Receiver for the Las Angeles Rams (LA Rams), suffered a game-ending injury in the 2nd quarter.  Some speculate that he did injure his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) on the same side in which he suffered a tear in the 2020 season.  OBJ did return to the sideline to lead his team from the bench.

Did you know your knee is one of the many hinge joints you have in your body?  Like your elbow, It can accomplish numerous physical feats.  Because your knee is a load-bearing hinge joint, this also means that it is one of the most commonly injured body parts.  Knee injuries may include a dull ache that runs from your hip to your knee.  Repetitive-use injuries that make it difficult to move your knee, or more severe injuries such as an ACL, meniscal, or cartilage tears that may require intensive rehabilitation or surgical correction.

Mathew Stafford – Ankle

In the 3rd quarter, D.J. Reader, 327lb Defensive tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals, landed on the left ankle of Mathew Stafford, Quarterback for the L.A. Rams. Stafford limped off the field and was assisted by training staff to assess his injury and retape his ankle. Stafford returned to the game and successfully led his team to win the 2022 Super Bowl.

Feet and ankles are both very dynamic structures. The ankle joint consists of three bones that all must interact with one another correctly, as well as various connective tissues that hold the assembly of the joint together. In order for your feet and ankles to function properly, everything must work together in harmony.

While both structures have complexities, the foot has an even more intricate makeup than the ankle. The foot consists of approximately two dozen bones, 30 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

Because the feet and ankles are so complex, it is common for people to sustain injuries in those areas, which can lead to physical limitations.

Eric Weddel – Pectoral Tear

Eric Weddel, Free safety for the LA Rams, suffered a pectoral tear in the 1st quarter. Weddel was assisted by LA training staff to tape and brace his shoulders and chest. He returned to play all 61 snaps and finished with five tackles. Weddle will require surgery for the severity of his injury.

He was confident he could return to the game because he was assessed and given appropriate treatment.
